Hawthorn

The hawthorn tree is a heady combination of beauty and danger: exquisite blooms and red, yellow or black berries are fiercely protected by lichen-encrusted thorns. My grandfather planted hawthorn trees for use as a living fence to protect his cattle. The thorns fascinate me most.

Harvested thorns (painful!) were sorted by size and carefully stacked into geometric shapes, then scanned. Digital images were scaled and printed. I then stitched thorns onto some of the images to create 3D works.
